Yale Day of Service - London Event - 14th May 2011

Pembroke House was founded in 1885 by students from Pembroke College, Cambridge to be a centre for social action in Walworth (Southwark), southeast London, which was then and now remains as one of London’s poorest communities. Thanks to a number of grants, Pembroke House was recently refurbished and hosts a number of projects which seek to make a positive difference to the inhabitants in the vicinity, which includes the Aylesbury Estate, the largest housing estate in Europe with approximately 10,000 inhabitants.  Pembroke House provides a facility that is visited by approximately 1,100 persons per week, thereby providing an important community service to Walworth.  Pembroke's website is www.pembrokehouse.org.uk.

Not included in the recent refurbishment, however, was the Residency of Pembroke House, which is the target for our Day of Service on 14th May.  The Residency houses those that participate in the social work of Pembroke House.  Any improvements to the Residency will improve the quality of life for those who live there, ensuring that this dwelling will continue to provide comfortable accommodation to those who provide valuable services to the mission of Pembroke House.

Our services required are painting, carpentry, landscaping/improvement of the garden and a general refurbishment/”makeover” of the Residency.  This project is open to alums of all ages and skill levels.

Our work will start at 9:30 a.m., but all are welcome to join at whatever time is convenient to you.  We will work until approximately 5:00 p.m., at which time the head of Pembroke House will provide a brief guided tour of the Aylesbury Estate to those who are interested.
