Yale School of Management Professors In London

Olav Sorenson, Frederick Frank '54 and Mary C. Tanner Professor of Management: "Venture Capital and Economic Growth"

Investments in venture capital have plummeted during the recent economic crisis. In the short term, that has made it more difficult for entrepreneurs to raise money, but will it also have longer-term effects on the economy? Professor Sorenson will discuss the critical role that a local venture capital community plays in enabling entrepreneurs, creating jobs and raising incomes.

Mushfiq Mobarak, Associate Professor of Economics: "Why is it so Difficult to Get Developing Country Citizens to Adopt Welfare-Improving Technologies and Behaviors?"

Professor Mobarak, a development economist at Yale SOM, will discuss results of large-scale field experiments he has conducted in South Asia and Africa, where he encourages investments in ‘apparently beneficial’ products and behaviors like improved cook-stoves, seasonal migration, sanitary latrines, and new agricultural technologies using financial incentives and other marketing techniques. Using randomized controlled trials, he tries to identify the key aversions to behavior change in these settings.

SOM would like to apologize for scheduling the event on Yom Kippur. We recognize this will preclude some people from being able to attend, so our apologies. This was the only day when both Professors would be in London and we wanted to make the most of this special opportunity.
