Saturday, 16 Nov 2019

YCL and European Yale Club members, family, and friends welcome!
(Please register to help us monitor interest and participation.)

Flights, accommodation, food, and Biennale entry not provided by YCL,
but to be arranged by participants on their own.

Prepare to walk your legs off and for typical November in Venice:
cooler weather, more rain, tidal flooding, and fewer tourists (!)

Join the YCL Art Circle for a mini-break in Venice during the penultimate weekend of the Venice Biennale! Part of the Saturday will be devoted to theme-based walks guided by Nixi (on works by artists from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and the diaspora) and Edward (theme TBD).

About the Venice Biennale
Considered the first and still the premier showcase of contemporary art worldwide, the Venice Biennale occupies the central (built 1895) and national (added 1907) pavilions at the Giardini della Biennale, with additional national exhibitions housed at the Arsenale (since 1980). Spaces throughout Venice--museums, churches, palazzi, warehouses--also host ancillary exhibitions, performances, and installations. Curated by Hayward Gallery Director Ralph Rugoff, this 58th iteration has, based on the reviews, lived up to the promise and ambiguity of the title 'May You Live in Interesting Times'.

About Nixi Cura (SY '88)
Nixi concurrently holds posts at SOAS University of London, the Royal Academy of Arts, and the University of Glasgow. In 2007-2017, Nixi was Director of the Arts of China MLitt and PhD programmes at Christie's Education/University of Glasgow. At Yale she read East Asian Studies, then studied Chinese painting, Buddhist art, and European Romanesque art at the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU. Her current research interests include: Qing art, especially during the Qianlong reign (1736-1795); collecting and antiquarian practices in the Qing, Republican and Manchukuo periods; and contemporary Chinese visual culture.

About Edward Oliver
As Senior Designer at The White Wall Company, London, Edward designs, fabricates and installs artworks on behalf of artists for major exhibitions around the world, including one sculpture at the 2019 Venice Biennale. Trained as an artist (Goldsmiths & UCA), Edward's own work involves video, photography and bricolage looking at the 'ruin-value' of modernity. His piece 'Double Expo' was published in the 'Dystopias and Utopias' issue of Feminist Review.
