Penn Club Cocktail Reception at the Courtauld Gallery

  • 02 Mar 2010
  • 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM
  • Courtauld Gallery, Somerset House, Strand, London WC2R 0RN
Save the date for a reception at one of London's great hidden gems. the Courtauld Institute Gallery in Somerset House.  Penn alumni and other US alumni friends will have exclusive access to the gallery without the crowds.

Join us for wine and canapés and welcome remarks from Courtauld Director Professor Deborah Swallow.  In addition, curator Stephanie Buck will be available throughout the event to answer any questions. In addition to the fine permanent collection, the gallery will house a temporary exhibition on one of its most famous drawings, "Michaelangelo's Dream."

Michelangelo’s Dream is one of the finest Italian Renaissance drawings and amongst The Courtauld Gallery’s greatest treasures.  The exhibition reunites this masterpiece with Michelangelo’s other ‘presentation drawings’ which he made for close friends.  Executed at the height of the artist’s career they have transformed the medium of drawing into an independent art form. Exhibited alongside these magnificent works is a group of autograph letters and love poems addressed by Michelangelo to his muse Cavalieri, many of which are on public display for the first time. This is a unique opportunity to see the Dream in context with these rare documents.  Drawing on major collections, including the Vatican Library, the Royal Collection and the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, this unprecedented display offers a new understanding of Michelangelo’s artistic vision and gives unique insight into his extraordinary powers of invention.
