About the Event:
Laura and Anna, half-sisters, plan a grand net stretching across the skyline of North London as a way to unite their community. But not everyone’s convinced. Meanwhile Hala, a Syrian refugee staying with the family, finds herself caught in a tangle of immigration red tape. With time running out, drought spreading, and the authorities closing in, the net becomes their arena in the pursuit of justice, joy and safety.
Misha Levkov’s stunning debut interweaves the lives of the three women as delicately as the web they weave on stage. Throughout, the play builds an open web of safety and revolt, an “Eruv”. It portrays the meeting of secular and religious visions, and the high stakes and chances for political action in our time.
There will be a Q&A after the evening's performance.
About the Artistic Team:
Misha Levkov launches his playwriting career with “In the Net,” the first in a trilogy of plays (and a novel) on politics and private life in the unsettled present day. Under his more commonly known name of Michael Levenson he is chair of the English Department and founding director of the Institute of the Humanities and Global Cultures at the University of Virginia. He has previously written books and essays on twentieth-century culture and literature and has lectured on the subject around the world including Yale, Harvard and Oxford University. All of his work concerns the mystery of modern times: how we struggle to live up to our moment and to break into a better future. Misha is a graduate of Harvard University (B.A.) and Stanford University (Ph.D.).
